I discovered this album very late. Now I'm in love with this song and its oniric atmosphere. I wish a live action Gorillaz movie. And I wish a scene with this song: // Foggy dawn, 2d smoking on the balcony. Murdoc shows him the lyrics of this song, 2d immediately likes it and asks him what inspired him. Murdoc doesn't answer, but we see the flashback with kid Murdoc who assist to (and suffer himself) his father's abuse and violence. "I am without a heart..." Back to present, Murdoc stares into space. 2d takes a cigarette from the pack and hands it to him with a smile, without saying anything (...but from the smile he seems to have guessed what Murdoc doesn't say). Murdoc takes the cigarette and, for a second, shows an human expression: a glimpse of fragility and gratitude. But it's just a brief moment. The scene ends with flashbacks of Noodle and Russel's traumas, alternating with the group's live performance. It remind us they are all broken.//

This song strikes so many emotions. The song sounds distant and sad. The chorus is melancholy and kinda lustful. Plastic Beach is my favorite album by them because at face value, the songs seem so happy and upbeat. But once you listen closely, you notice that they have a more mysterious and melancholy feel to them. They give such a good vibe and aesthetic and I could listen to them for hours on end. I love how it switches from they, him, and her. Idk if its intentional but i love it.

I like to imagine that is Noodle singing with 2-D in the chorus and "when the sunlight is arising" and "and the space has been broken". very depressing but very beautiful.

Images from this song: A whale swims through the deep, releasing its harrowing call throughout the waters. It swims upwards and eventually leaves the water, taking flight. It has its sights set far beyond the circling seagulls. The occupying members of a passing fishing boat watch in shock as the behemoth of a whale rises into the sky as if filled with helium. It calls again, the skies trembling beneath its alien sounds. It eventually leaves the Earth's atmosphere, flying faster and faster. It finds itself impervious to the harsh environment of space. It just keeps picking up speed, passing planets and galaxies. It moves faster than anything has ever moved. Panicked, it attempts to call out one final time. However, it cannot. It instead bursts, rather like a bubble. There is no blood or viscera. It is completely clean an empty on the inside. It was just a shell. Teh End.

To me, this song is about how we may never get to be able to truly visit and connect with distant stars, or colonies there. Happens to be also a somewhat literal interpretation. "The space between them is broken", in that it's receeding faster than we could ever hope to overcome.

I love this song. specifically the live version. the lyrics are almost made to be sung live with the balance of static and unique acoustics.

I love gorillaz. Good jogging music. Good rainy day music. Decent gaming music. My co workers enjoy me playing plastic beach songs at work. Good island camping music. Good depression music. Just. . . . good music.

This song makes me think of someone who's lost everything but has decided that straying on his own path would be the best option. The beat sounding likes wolves howling representing him straying as a lone wolf

I feel a little silly saying this, but every time I listen to this song, I always like to whistle the little tune that Noodle plays. I feel like if I whistle, then maybe one day someone will whistle back, almost like an echo. I just wish I had discovered Gorillaz sooner. I've been listening to them since 2018, and I can say, without a doubt, that they are my most favorite band. They are really one of my biggest inspirations to make music!

Distant stars come in black or red I've seen their worlds inside my head They connect with the fall of man They breathe you in and dive as deep as they can There's nothing you can do for them They are the force between When the sunlight is arising There's nothing you can say to him He is without a heart And the space has been broken It's broken Our love is broken It's broken Our love is broken Is it far away in the glitter freeze Or in our eyes every time they meet? It's by the light of the plasma screens We keep switched on all through the night while we sleep There's nothing you can do for them They are the force between When the sunlight is arising There's nothing you can say to her I am without a heart And the space has been broken It's broken Our love is broken It's broken Our love is broken It's broken Our love is broken It's broken Our love is broken

I've been listening to this song for years now but apparently I never paid close attention to the lyrics. Until yesterday I legit thought rather than "broken, our love", they were singing "Yoko Ono".
